I was recently selected by Screen NSW to participate in Australians in Film’s (AiF) Charlie’s Talent Escalator Lab, with four other awesome writers and directors. We did an intensive five day online conference hearing from US networks, streamers and studios, as well as writers, directors and producers. We discussed everything from pitching, to audience trends, to how the US industry is tackling Covid-19. This initiative is supported by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and each of us was paired with an industry mentor. I received one-on-one mentoring from Director Kate Dennis, who is a hero of mine. She started her career in Australia and went on to dominate the US market, receiving an Emmy nomination for an episode of The Handmaid’s Tale in 2017. We will regroup in LA when the boarders reopen and I cannot wait to hang out with the other filmmakers in person. It was a treat to spend five days with Mithila Gupta, Darlene Johnson, Julie Kalceff and Monica Zanetti who are all amazingly talented but also genuinely extremely cool and nice and lovely. Will keep you posted!
